A Man Called Otto: Movie Review
A Man Called Otto: The Megar Man, With The Mighty Purpose.
Tom Hanks has been in a shocking number of hit movies and has played an enormous variety of characters from Woody in Toy Story to the kid in Polar Express. Even with the massive collection of personalities he has played on screen, I thought this one seemed out of place for his acting style. I could not have been more wrong. Did I mention this movie was nominated for 10 Oscars?
The Plot (10/10)
For those of you who do not know, this movie is about an elderly man named Otto who is a widower. He is introduced as stern and grumpy and even suicidal. He does not like anyone and nobody seems to like him. All of this changes when he gets a new set of neighbors who are not as rule-following as he would like. Throughout the course of the movie, the old stern man softens up and becomes a joyful soul. The plot was amazing and well-developed. It is hard not to love every second of it.
The Theme (10/10)
I will not lie this movie is not for the faint of heart. It has some really serious moments and some very sad scenes, but the theme is amazing. The main theme of the movie is that everyone has a purpose. Throughout the movie, Otto learns that even with the passing of his wife he still has a purpose. He can help people. Even though there are a lot of sad and tragic parts there are also a lot of uplifting hopeful parts. This movie perfectly portrays the theme and keeps the audience entertained along the way.
The Dialogue (10/10)
The dialogue was the perfect blend of sad and funny. Throughout the course of the movie, the mood is an emotional rollercoaster. In one scene you will be laughing out loud and the very next you will be trying your best to hold back tears. The dialogue perfectly captures this. Not a single line feels out of place and every joke is well-written and meticulous.
Cinematography (9/10)
This is the only part of this movie that was not absolutely perfect. The cinematography was good. It matched the pace and theme of the movie, but it was nothing special. For a movie with only a 50 million dollar budget they did amazingly, but when compared to other movies it was a little lack luster. Still an amazing job but it just seemed to be missing something.
New Section Alert!
Sound Track (10/10)
This movie killed it with the soundtrack! Every scene had the perfect music to portray the correct mood. When more solemn scenes were on screen the soundtrack matched. The directors were so bold to have a large portion of the movie completely silent. In contrast, when the happy uplifting scenes were playing the soundtrack made me feel true joy. Amazing contrast in the music and it blended well with the theme and mood.
Overall (10/10)
This is the first movie I have reviewed to get a 10. The plot was amazing. It was perfectly accompanied by excellent acting and even better writing. Every scene flawlessly flowed to the next and the audience remained entertained throughout the whole thing. Do not get me wrong this movie is not a happy one. You will be sad and you may even cry, but it has a powerful message and is truly an amazing movie.
