The Super Mario Bros Movie Review

The Super Mario Bros Movie: Breaking Box Office Records and Spotify Charts

(There will be a couple of spoilers, get over it)

This movie has broken the box office with a shocking 1.2 Billion dollars worldwide. It is currently the highest-performing movie in 2023 and Jack Black's hit song 'Peaches' is eligible for a Grammy. 'Peaches' is currently #65 in the world on Spotify! With all that hype It's tough for a movie to live up to the high expectations.

The Plot 4/10

The plot was a rollercoaster. It seemed haphazard and disconnected in some parts, but in others, it seemed to be written by Shakespeare himself. To be fair this movie had a runtime of 1hr 32m which is not a lot. Another thing to be said is that this movie is made for kids so the plot doesn't necessarily need to be there, but come on. They went to the Kong Kingdom to get help for battle then they didn't even use their help to defeat Bowser. Also, why was there only one superstar, in the game there are loads. One more thing why did Mario and Luigi go to different spots when they went through the same pipe. Finally, they could have definitely escaped from those cages.

The Theme 7/10

The themes in this movie are not bad. Considering it is a pretty short movie with a bad plot I'm impressed by how well-represented their theme is. The idea they wanted the audience to get was that it takes a team to overcome evil. They did have to work together to beat Bowser. They may have had to use performance-enhancing drugs but hey I'm sure the kids won't remember that part.

The Dialogue 8/10

Once again I am reminded that this movie is made for kids. The lines were corny and predictable but that is to be expected when their target audience is in the fifth grade. With that said the writers of this movie still had some good jokes hidden up their sleeve and defiantly made me laugh a couple of times. The movie is full of funny jokes and references to other parts of the Nintendo universe and I am sure everyone in the audience appreciated it.

Animation 9/10

Most people do not go to a children's movie to see good animation but wow was I pleasantly surprised. The shading and textures in every scene were stunning. They killed it. With a budget of only 100 Million dollars, they really knocked it out of the park with the animation. The only reason I'm giving this a nine is that no scene was beautiful they just looked good. Nothing more nothing less.

Overall 6/10

If you are under the age of 14 I would say this could be the greatest movie of all time, but when looking at it through the lens of an adult it is just ok. There are a lot of references to the Mario games that make this movie fun for all ages, but it just doesn't stack up against the other movies being released. Even though it is not my favorite it is certainly a cultural icon and is a fun movie to watch.
